AIGA aims to raise $100,000 for historically underrepresented design students

New York, NY—From now until the end of the year, AIGA will be raising scholarship funds to support students in photography, illustration, and graphic design—with a goal of raising $100,000 towards academic scholarships. Since 1995, the well-known AIGA Worldstudio Scholarships program has awarded $1.3 million to more than 800 college students to help increase diversity in the design profession and foster social and environmental responsibility in the artists, designers, studios, and companies of tomorrow.

On November 30, AIGA will celebrate the season of giving by participating in GivingTuesday—a global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. Impact stories will be shared across @AIGAdesign social media channels.

Ahead of GivingTuesday, on November 22 at 11:00 a.m. ET, AIGA's Executive Director, Bennie F. Johnson, will host a Fireside Chat with Art Taylor, President and CEO of BBB Wise Giving Alliance. They will discuss how organizations can fundraise more effectively and what to look for with individual giving. The chat will be livestreamed on AIGA’s LinkedIn channel.

“AIGA’s mission is truly about positive change—direct support through scholarships is a tangible and often critical entry point in the professional journey of aspiring designers,” said Bennie F. Johnson, AIGA’s Executive Director. “We believe all students should have the opportunity to pursue design education. I know that working together, we can transform our community by supporting the dreams of future designers.”

“The current upheaval around race in America has demonstrated that initiatives like AIGA Worldstudio Scholarships are more important than ever. We must provide support to the next generation of diverse, creative talent, to make our society more inclusive and reflective of who we truly are," said Mark Randall, Principal, Worldstudio and program partner for AIGA Worldstudio Scholarships.

The AIGA Worldstudio Scholarships program increases diversity in the creative professions by removing financial barriers and providing equitable opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students from underrepresented and economically disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve their educational goals. Scholarships are awarded annually to students with positive social agendas who are studying photography, illustration, and design disciplines in colleges and universities in the United States. Students are selected not only for their talent and their need, but also for their demonstrated commitment to giving back to the community through their work.
